A Bookstore in New York
wiredthoughts:
I’d really like to own a small bookstore in Brooklyn.
Think about it: - coffee served at the front desk
- bikes sold close to the door
- records in the back right corner
- books on the left and right
- arthouse cinema in a backroom
- roof used for small concerts
- outdoor cafe (you order inside)
- curated collections (by authors)
- international newspapers
-...

– buried towards the end of this piece in the WSJ on the Atlantic Yards (paltry) design choices is this nugget of Ratner being the typical piece of shit most of Brooklyn (and New York) has grown to know him as. As BrooklynSpeaks puts it:

My boy never sees the city
A man and a boy in a puffy winter coat were leaning against the rail at the Chinatown end of the Manhattan bridge. As I approached, on my bike, the man asked me, “Which way is Times Square?”
Man, these tourists are hopelessly lost, I thought. I gestured north, in the vague direction of the Chrysler building peaking up over the horizon. “That way, and over to the left.” I...

Employee of the Year
icarntspell:
In CVS this morning I watched a woman with an employee name tag that read “Icyeee” grab multiple boxes of frozen White Castle burgers and proclaim she was about to “get her breakfast on.”
Most important meal of the day.

catch the wave
He waved at me through the window, the kind of wave you do to get someone’s attention before telling them something like you dropped something! or run there’s a scary person chasing you or no the subway’s the other direction.
I caught the wave with the corner of my eye and turned. “What?” I mouthed.
He mouthed something back to me and gestured behind me. I turned...

We like dancing.
The narrow, crowded stairs out of the 79th street 1 stop are backed up by a stroller. A small girl in a big puffy pink coat and her mother walk up the left side of the stairs. The girl zig-zags, cutting off two well dressed men sprinting up the right side of the stairs, nearly stomping on their beautiful leather shoes. The mom grabs the coat and pulls the girl back to the left, apologizing to the...

Father and son, I think, dad jogging to keep pace with the little guy bravely pedaling uphill on a bike about two feet tall. He gets tired and stops. The dad stops behind him, puts a hand on his back, and gently gives him a push up the hill.

I never would have guessed
I see in passing the super of one of the buildings on my block - the one that houses my favorite cafe and bar- about every other day. He jokes that the bar’s one seat near an electric outlet, the seat I’m always in, is reserved for me, and waves from the nearby window each time he passes.
He’s an older man, a long time resident of this historically Jamaican neighborhood and...

Do I know any bartenders or bar owners? Do you know if anyone is looking to hire some extra FOH hands at their bar or restaurant?
I’m looking for either a hosting or bartending or barback gig. Looking for work in December is the most depressing thing but I ain’t care!

Ayo, you like black people?
– A genius trying to sell me his mixtape on the street. (via stryker) NYC street-sales tactics leave something to be desired. Like the people on the sidewalks asking if you have a minute to sign their petition. No, I don’t have a minute, who ever has a minute? Maybe there’s a market for...
